In October 2007, we spent a week in Prague, the 'Golden City', on the occasion of a conference. Prague has an unusually long list of cultural sights.
These include Charles Bridge, adorned with its 'bridge saints' and bustling with artists; Hradčany, home to St. Vitus Cathedral, the Royal Palace, and the Golden Lane; and Old Town Square, where the Town Hall and the astronomical clock stand. A week is hardly enough time to take in all these highlights.
The Prague we experienced in 1979 was grey and lethargic, but after the dawn of a new era, nothing remains of that city. The city is colourful, lively and westernised, yet it still has its romantic idylls.
We were impressed by the artistic atmosphere, which could be felt everywhere — for example, during the evening concerts given by young people in Prague's churches. Bohemian cuisine is delicious (perhaps a little too rich), and like Pilsner Urquell beer, it is still affordable in Prague.
